Is the day after the inauguration of a new president a federal holiday?
Only federal employees in the District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland, Arlington and Fairfax counties in Virginia, and the towns of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia are eligible for an inauguration day holiday. District employees in Washington, DC, have the day off as well.

The president and vice president of the United States are sworn in on Inauguration Day by the winners of the previous year’s elections. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies organises the swearing-in ceremony, which takes place at the Capitol. A procession along Pennsylvania Avenue usually follows.
The new president stands on the presidential viewing platform in front of the White House and observes the parade from there. Thousands of people may be seen along the parade route. On the other hand, a large number of Americans tune in to the ceremony via television or radio.

Since then, January 20 has been designated as Inauguration Day, and the term of office formally begins at 12:00 noon on that day.
The vice-president is sworn in first, then the president is sworn in at exactly 12:00 pm. The president and vice-president are given four ruffles and flourishes when they are sworn in. Drums are used for the ruffles, while bugles, which are valveless brass instruments, are used for the flourishes. In preparation for the president’s anthem, “Hail to the Chief,” and the vice president’s anthem, “Hail, Columbia,” the ruffles and flourishes create a fanfare. The howitzers of Washington’s military district then fire a 21-gun salute.

The president and vice president will be honoured guests at a luncheon hosted by the United States Congress following the event. Later in the day, they’ll march from the Capitol to the White House down Pennsylvania Avenue. As is customary when Inauguration Day falls on a Sunday, the oath of office is typically taken in a private ceremony that day, followed the following day by a public ceremony and celebrations.
