How To Fix Data Error Cyclic Redundancy Check

Have you encountered a dialog box with message “Data error (cyclic redundancy check)” while copying any file from your device to other. That is nothing but  an error happening during data copying from one device to another.

This can occur due to improper connection with the hard drive, or may be due to corrupt files or can be due to one of the many reasons. The cyclic redundancy error (CRC) generally happens due to hardware issues, but also can be software related ,too.

Data Error Cyclic Redundancy Check

So, in hardware, it can be due to a USB/portable device issue which leads to improper connection or may be a bad drive or may be a bad sector of the device. In the software aspect, the file can be corrupted or the problem may rely on drivers.

The problem related due to the USB/port device or corrupt file can be easily checked and should be checked first. So, for checking the condition of the port device ,try using any other port. If that port does not show any problem that means the previous one was the reason.

Also, corrupt files can be checked by sharing the file in different drivers, If you can’t copy that file in any other drivers through any way, the file may be corrupted and because of that you are getting this issue.

Now, above two was general method which should be checked first, before going any deep in resolving issue. So, if your USB/port is all fine and file is not corrupted then you should move to check upon the methods below:-

How To Solve Data Error Cyclic Redundancy Check

Take a look.

Method 1: chkdsk

Chkdsk in windows is provided for scanning disk ,file system corruption and bad sectors. Not just checking or scanning it fixes those errors too. So, for rectifying the issue of corrupt files or drives, this is the most appropriate method.

Now, to run chkdsk, you will have to specify the drive letter. There have been some cases in which people can’t find their drive letters. So, we are here to help them in this. If you can’t find your device letter ,follow the steps below:-

Step 1: First of all ,connect the problematic drive to the computer. If your main hard drive is having issues, connect it to the other computer and use that as a secondary device.

Step 2: After step 1, press windows key and ‘E’ together.

Step 3: Check if your device is showing there or not. If not ,press ‘WINDOWS +R’.

Step 4: Next, type ‘devmgmt.msc’ and press ENTER.

Step 5: Now click over dsk drives twice.

Step 6: Your connected device would have appeared in the list. If not, right click over  Disk drives and scan for hardwares changes.  If yellow sign is showing, right click over drive and update driver software and search automatically for updated driver software.

Step 7: Now, long press Windows key and R.

Step 8: Type ‘ diskmgmt.msc’ and click Enter.

Step 9: Locate your disk  and click over. If there is black bar over your device that means it is unallocated, then right click over it and reactivate the disk.

Step 10: Next, press windows.

Step 11: Then go to the command prompt and run as administrator.

Step 12: Next, type diskpart and press enter.

Step 13: Type automount enable and press Enter.

Finally, again attach the problematic drive and check if the letter is showing up or not.

After knowing your device letter select which drive you want to check i.e usb drive  or  main hard drive. Whichever to check depend upon situation. But, recommended  is to check external one first

Now, to check the drives, follow below steps:

Step 1: Firstly click the windows key.

Step 2: Next, go to the command prompt.

Step 3: Then, click as administrator.

Step 4: Now, type chkdsk C:/f and tap Enter. In place of “C” write your device letter.

Step 5: Hold windows key and press E to open windows explorer.

Step 6: If you see a message something like “chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use………” type Y and tap enter.

Step 7: Finally wait to finish.

After the process completes ,the result of the disk check  will be shown. Most probably,it would have solved the issue. But if there is still a problem, run chkdsk before loading the windows.

Here are the steps to do so:

Step 1: First connect USB to computer.

Step 2: Next, restart your computer.

Step 3: Press any key to boot.

Step 4: Then choose keyboard layout.

Step 5: Next, adjust your language, time and keyboard method and press NEXT.

Step 6: On the install windows page, select Repair your computer and tap Advanced options.

Step 7: Then, click Command prompt and type chkdsk/rC: and press Enter.

This would have solved the issue. Check that by logging into the window.

Method 2: Check Disk Utility

Though chkdsk is the best method for scanning and repairing corrupted files or drivers etc, this method of checking disk utility is easier from chkdsk one. We can very easily do check disk utility from My computer following very simple steps mentioned below:

Step 1: First of all, long press Windows key and then ‘E’ to open windows explorer.

Step 2: Next, right click over the drive you want to check and click over ‘properties’.

Step 3: Then, tap over the TOOLS tab and click over ‘CHECK’ in the error check box.

Step 4: A dialog box would appear. Tick the ‘automatically fix file system error’ and press start.

Wait for the process to complete which may take some hours. After completion, your issues would have been solved.

Method 3: Quick Format

If the above methods did not work and you are unable to access your valuable data ,then quick format is the only method we are left with. Listening to quick format, if you are getting worried about losing your valuable data, then kindly, don’t stress as quick sort does not remove the data.

In simple words, it just earses the table that helps in identifying the location of all data in drive. The data will not get erased unless you copy something new to replace the old one. So, data  l will be safe until you don’t copy anything new and just perform a Quick scan .

After scanning, you can use a data recovery tool to recover the data. For recovering, below are the steps to follow:

Step 1: First of all, connect the problematic drive to the computer. If your main hard drive is having issues, connect it to the other computer and use that as a secondary device.

Step 2: Then press windows key with ‘E’ to go to windows explorer.

Step 3: Select the problematic driver and right click .

Step 4: Next, click format and under format, choose quick format and click Start.

Step 5: Wait for Quick format to finish. After, it is completed ,you can run chkdsk or Check disk utility operations. For detailed information and steps about these methods, check method 1 and method 2.

Step 6: Finally, download any data recovery tool and recover your data.

This will recover your valuable data. If not, you can go to some IT professional.
